PLO CROSS-BORDER OPERATIONS 1965-1967
The PLO conducted its first raid on Israel on 1, January 1965. An Atsifa [storm] (the PLO’s military wing) detachment placed an explosive charge in a canal of the national water carrier. It was discovered and dismantled without any damage.
Between January 1965 and June 1967 the PLO conducted 113 cross-border operations (1965 — 35; 1966 — 44; 1967 — 37) but claimed to have conducted some 300 operations. About half of these PLO detachments crossed into Israel from Jordan (large majority from the West Bank), a third from Syria. All the PLO strikes were against civilian objectives, and 11 Israeli civilians were killed and 62 wounded in them. The operations included 35 mine layings (inc. one in a soccer stadium) ; 17 bombs in houses; 47 bombs in installations.
